2009 Annual Report United States Postal Service | 13
Pennsylvania Letter Carrier Steve Scully scans a barcode.
This year we marked a milestone
with the launch of our Intelligent
Mail services, which use barcode
technology to enable business cus-
tomers to track the status of their
mail so they can provide better ser-
vice to their customers. And the Post-
al Service gets important operational
data to allow for mail service mea-
surement to help us improve service
for our customers.
We are, as always, at the leading
edge of mailing technology innova-
tion. We continue to roll out the Flats
Sequencing System, which is revolu-
tionizing the way we process at-size
mail, such as magazines and catalogs,
by sorting it in the order in which its
delivered by carriers. This new tech-
nology will deliver high-impact effi -
ciency and improve mail processing,
and make sure customers get even
more value from the mail.
By making new technologies work
for us, we help make the mail work
better for our customers.
Offering Express Mail Hold For
Pickup online, which enables cus-
tomers to request a package be
shipped directly to a Post Offi ce
for pickup by the recipient.
Updating the business mailer web-
site at ribbs.usps.gov with easy-
to-search indexes and improved
navigation.
Introducing twoBill Me Later”
payment options for businesses
and consumers who use Click-N-
Ship at usps.com.
During the year, we
turned to technology
solutions that helped
both customers and
employees, including:
Introducing an online Learning
Management System to manage
and deliver training for employees
and an electronic Individual Devel-
opment Plan program for career
development.
Expanding an online translation
tool that helps employees com-
municate more easily with non-
English-speaking retail customers,
including those who speak Chi-
nese, German, Hindi, Polish and
Vietnamese.
Installing overhead scanning sys-
tems that allow for continuous,
hands-free scanning of fl ats and
packages.
