By handling more complex applications and
i n c reasing amounts of information, today’s new
32-bit operating systems are beginning to fulfill
their promise of making things easier and more
reliable for PC users. But migrating to more
a d vanced systems such as Mi c ro s o f t ’s Wi n d o ws 95
and Windows NT continues to pose challenges
for both individuals and corporations alike. In
anticipation of this, Symantec delivered a host of
new products and tools in fiscal 1996, on both
platforms, to help users make the transition easier.
Working closely with Microsoft, Symantec
d e veloped three powe rful products for the
launch of Wi n d o ws 95 that complemented and
e n h a n c e d the operating system’s utility features.
For example, No rton Utilities for Wi n d ows 95 –t h e
m a rk e t ’s only 32-bit continuous system-p ro t e c t i o n
and data- re c o ve ry system– g a ve users the
means to thoroughly analyze and repair virtually
any problem on their disks. Equally important,
the program didn’t require users to know how or
e ven when to use it; its modules work in the
b a c k g round, automatically monitoring all vital
system components, and alerting the user to
any problems.
Si m i l a r l y, No rton Na v i g a t o r i m p roved the
u s e r ’s experience with a host of highly valuable file
management features not found in Wi n d o ws 95,
such as index-based searching for speedy access
to programs and information. And, with the
absence of a virus-protection component in the
n e w operating system, Sy m a n t e c ’s No r ton An t i V i ru s
p r ovided complete, 3 2-bit detection and re m o va l .
Later in the ye a r, the Company introduced ve r s i o n s
of other Symantec products for Wi n d ows 95,
including p cA N Y W H E R E,and will continue to do
so to enhance this new platform’s environment.
For many corporate users, a more logical
choice for departmental or enterprise-wide PC
operating systems wasWi n d ows NT. These users,
however, still had the same need for tools that
would offer the security and management feature s
they we re used to on their larger systems.
Sy m a n t e c’s highly successful No rton N T To o l s
fulfilled this role, furnishing an essential set
of proven utilities to detect and re m o ve viru s e s ,
manage files, and continuously monitor and
view key system information.
With the growing acceptance of the N T
operating system, and the considerable trust and
reputation provided by the No rton name,
Sy m a n t e c ’s No r ton N T To o l s p r omises a significant
e n t ry for the Company into what is expected to
be a $28 billion Wi n d o ws N T m a rket by19 9 8 .
But whatever the size of the market, Sy m a n t e c
is committed to keeping the user experience easy,
e ven as operating systems become more complex.
