I
n 1990, we broke our
own record by serving
more than 30,000
customers at the
grand opening of the first
McDonald’s in what was
then the Soviet
Union.
What’s more,
our operations in
Russia continue
to hold records.
Today, that very same res-
taurant, located in Moscow’s
Pushkin Square, is the world’s
busiest McDonald’s. Further,
Russia ranked second in the
average number of customers
served per McDonald’s res-
taurant in 2002. We attribute
much of this popularity to
our uncompromising com-
mitment to quality, service,
cleanliness and value.
Given the unique cir-
cumstances associated with
doing business here in the
early 1990s, we created a
state-of-the-art food pro-
cessing and distribution
center, called McComplex,
in Moscow. As a result, we
were able to manage costs
while ensuring uninterrupted
supplies of high-quality pro-
ducts. Over the years, we also
forged strong relationships
with more than 100 local
suppliers. Currently, these
suppliers and
our McComplex
are meeting
our growing
needs in Russia.
In fact, the
McComplex also exports
ingredients to our operations
in 18 other countries.
Today, we operate
about 95 restaurants in
27 cities throughout Russia.
As the country continues its
transition to a free-market
economy, its middle class
continues to grow and
demand for McDonald’s is
increasing. During the next
three to four years, we plan
to add about 50 restaurants
in Russia. We will locate
most of these in Moscow
and St. Petersburg, highly
populated cities of this
country, where The Golden
Arches are becoming a part
of everyday life for many.

area of this restaurant closes
at midnight, and there is
no drive-thru. However,
the 24-hour McExpress
has proven to be a cost-
efficient way of capturing
sales, while providing
added convenience for
customers who are out
and about at all hours in
this high-traffic location.
