Networldwidesalesofpicturemakerkiosksandrelatedmedia
increased58%in2004ascomparedwith2003,primarilyduetostrong
volumeincreasesandfavorableexchange.Salescontinuetobedrivenby
strongmarketacceptanceofKodak’snewgenerationofkiosksaswellas
anincreaseinconsumerdemandfordigitalprintingatretail.
NetworldwidesalesfromthehomeprintingsolutionsSPG,which
includesinkjetphotopaperandprinterdocks/media,increased47%in
thecurrentyearascomparedwiththeprioryear.Forinkjetpaper,2004
wasmarkedbyincreasedcompetitionfromstorebrandsandthemixshift
associatedwithconsumer’spreferenceforsmallerformatpapers.Kodak’s
printerdockproductscontinuedtoexperiencestrongsalesgrowthduring
2004.
TraditionalStrategicProductGroups’RevenuesD&FISsegmenttra-
ditionalproductsaleswere$6,509millionforthecurrentyearascompared
with$7,446millionfortheprioryear,representingadecreaseof$937
million,or13%,primarilydrivenbydeclinesinthefilmcaptureSPGand
theconsumeroutputSPG.NetworldwidesalesofthefilmcaptureSPG,
includingconsumerrollfilm(35mmfilmandAdvantixfilm),one-time-use
cameras(OTUC),professionalfilms,reloadabletraditionalfilmcameras,
andbatteries/videotape,decreased16%in2004ascomparedwith2003,
primarilyreflectingvolumedeclinesandnegativeprice/mixexperiencedfor
allsignificantfilmcaptureproductcategories.Thesedeclineswerepartially
offsetbyfavorableexchange.
U.S.consumerfilmindustrysell-throughvolumesdecreasedapproxi-
mately18%in2004ascomparedwith2003.Kodak’ssell-inconsumer
filmvolumesdeclined21%ascomparedwiththeprioryear,reflectinga
decreaseinU.S.retailers’inventories.
Aspreviouslyannounced,theCompany’scurrentestimateofworld-
wideconsumerfilmindustryvolumesfor2005coulddeclineasmuchas
20%,withU.S.volumesdecliningasmuchas30%.
NetworldwidesalesfortheretailphotofinishingSPG,whichincludes
colornegativepaper,equipmentandservices,chemistry,andphotofinishing
servicesatretail,decreased6%in2004ascomparedwith2003,primarily
reflectinglowervolumesofQualexretailphotofinishingservices,partially
offsetbyfavorableexchange.
NetworldwidesalesforthewholesalephotofinishingSPG,which
includescolornegativepaper,equipment,chemistry,andphotofinishing
servicesatQualexintheU.S.andConsumerImagingServices(CIS)
outsidetheU.S.,decreased31%in2004ascomparedwith2003,primarily
reflectinglowervolumes,partiallyoffsetbyfavorableexchange.Thelower
volumesreflecttheeffectsofdigitalreplacement.
NetworldwidesalesfortheentertainmentfilmsSPG,including
originationandprintfilmstotheentertainmentindustryincreased12%in
2004ascomparedwith2003,reflectingvolumeincreasesandfavorable
exchangethatwaspartiallyoffsetbynegativeprice/mix.
GrossProfitGrossprofitfortheD&FISsegmentwas$2,612millionfor
2004ascomparedwith$2,864millionfor2003,representingadecrease
of$252millionor9%.Thegrossprofitmarginwas28.4%inthecurrent
yearascomparedwith31.0%intheprioryear.The2.6percentagepoint
decreasewasprimarilyattributabletodecreasesinprice/mixthatimpacted
grossprofitmarginsbyapproximately5.3percentagepoints,partially
offsetbymanufacturingcostimprovements,whichfavorablyimpacted
grossmarginsbyapproximately2.4percentagepoints.Thedecreasein
price/mixwasprimarilyduetotheimpactofdigitalsubstitution,resulting
inadecreaseinsalesofhighermargintraditionalproducts,theimpactof
whichwasonlypartiallyoffsetbyincreasedsalesoflowermargindigital
products.
Selling,GeneralandAdministrativeExpensesSG&Aexpensesfor
theD&FISsegmentwere$1,665millionfor2004ascomparedwith$1,967
millionfor2003,representingadecreaseof$302millionor15%.Thenet
decreaseinSG&Aspendingisprimarilyattributabletocostsavingsrealized
frompositioneliminationsassociatedwithongoingfocusedcostreduction
programsandreductionsinadvertisingexpense,partiallyoffsetbyunfavor-
ableexchangeof$50million.Asapercentageofsales,SG&Aexpense
decreasedfrom21%intheprioryearto18%inthecurrentyear.
ResearchandDevelopmentCostsR&DcostsfortheD&FISsegment
decreased$113millionor23%from$481millionin2003to$368million
in2004.Asapercentageofsales,R&Dcostsdecreasedfrom5%inthe
prioryearto4%inthecurrentyear.ThedecreaseinR&Disprimarilydue
toadeclineinspendingrelatedtoconsumerandprofessionalimaging
traditionalproductsandservices.Inaddition,thedeclinewaspartlyat-
tributabletoa$21millionwrite-offforpurchasedin-processR&Din2003,
withnosuchchargeincurredinthecurrentyear.
Earnings(Losses)FromContinuingOperationsBeforeInterest,
OtherIncome(Charges),NetandIncomeTaxesEarningsfromcon-
tinuingoperationsbeforeinterest,otherincome(charges),netandincome
taxesfortheD&FISsegmentincreased$164million,or39%,from$416
millionin2003to$580millionin2004,primarilyasaresultofthefactors
describedabove.
Health
OnOctober7,2003,theCompanycompletedtheacquisitionofallofthe
outstandingsharesofPracticeWorks,Inc.(PracticeWorks),aleading
providerofdentalpracticemanagementsoftware.Aspartofthistransac-
tion,Kodakalsoacquired100%ofPracticeWorks’Paris-basedsubsidiary,
TrophyRadiologie,S.A.,adeveloperandmanufacturerofdentaldigitalra-
diographicequipment,whichPracticeWorkspurchasedinDecember2002.
TheacquisitionofPracticeWorksandTrophywasexpectedtocontribute
approximately$200millioninsalestotheHealthsegmentduringthefirst
fullyear.Fullyear2004netsalesforPracticeWorks(acquiredinOctober
2003)were$212million,whichresultedinincrementalnetsalesof$164
millionfortheHealthsegment.
Itisanticipatedthatthistransactionwillbeslightlydilutivetoearn-
ingsfromthedateofacquisitionthroughtheendof2005andaccretiveto
earningsthereafter.ThisacquisitionenablesKodaktoofferitscustomersa
fullspectrumofdentalimagingproductsandservicesfromtraditionalfilm
todigitalradiographyandphotography,andmovedtheHealthsegmentinto
theleadingpositioninthedentalpracticemanagementanddentaldigital
radiographicmarkets.
WorldwideRevenuesNetworldwidesalesfortheHealthsegmentwere
$2,686millionfor2004ascomparedwith$2,431millionfor2003,repre-
