millionwerereportedinrestructuringcostsandotherintheaccompany-
ingConsolidatedStatementofEarningsfortheyearendedDecember31,
2004.Includedinthe$418millionchargetakenforseverancecostswasa
netcurtailmentgainof$6million.Thisnetcurtailmentgainisdisclosedin
Note17,“RetirementPlans”andNote18,“OtherPostretirementBenefits.”
Includedinthe$99millionchargetakenforexitcostswasa$16million
chargeforenvironmentalremediationassociatedwiththeclosuresofthe
manufacturingfacilityinCoburg,AustraliaandToronto,Canada,andthe
closureofaQualexwholesalephotofinishinglabintheU.S.Theliabilityre-
latedtothischargeisdisclosedinNote11,“CommitmentsandContingen-
cies”under“Environmental.”During2004,theCompanymade$169million
ofseverancepaymentsand$47millionofexitcostpaymentsrelatedto
the2004-2006RestructuringProgram.Inthefourthquarterof2004,the
Companyreversed$6millionofseverancereserves,asseverancepay-
mentswerelessthanoriginallyestimated.The$1millionexitcostsreserve
reversalrecordedinthethirdquarterof2004resultedfromthesettlement
ofaleaseobligationforanamountthatwaslessthanoriginallyestimated.
Thesereservereversalswereincludedinrestructuringcostsandotherin
theaccompanyingConsolidatedStatementofEarningsfortheyearended
December31,2004.Asaresultoftheinitiativesalreadyimplemented
underthe2004-2006RestructuringProgram,severancepaymentswillbe
paidduringperiodsthrough2007since,inmanyinstances,theemployees
whosepositionswereeliminatedcanelectorarerequiredtoreceivetheir
paymentsoveranextendedperiodoftime.Mostexitcostswerepaiddur-
ing2004.However,certaincosts,suchaslong-termleasepayments,will
bepaidoverperiodsafter2004.
Asaresultofinitiativesimplementedunderthe2004-2006Re-
structuringProgram,theCompanyrecorded$152millionofaccelerated
depreciationonlong-livedassetsincostofgoodssoldintheaccompany-
ingConsolidatedStatementofEarningsfortheyearendedDecember31,
2004.Theaccelerateddepreciationrelatestolong-livedassetsaccounted
forundertheheldandusedmodelofSFASNo.144.Theyear-to-date
amountof$152millionrelatesto$49millionofphotofinishingfacilitiesand
equipment,$102millionofmanufacturingfacilitiesandequipment,and
$1millionofadministrativefacilitiesandequipmentthatwillbeuseduntil
theirabandonment.TheCompanywillrecordapproximately$142million
ofadditionalaccelerateddepreciationin2005relatedtotheinitiatives
implementedin2004.Additionalamountsofaccelerateddepreciationmay
berecordedin2005and2006astheCompanycontinuestoexecuteits
2004-2006RestructuringProgram.
Thechargesof$826millionrecordedin2004included$435million
applicabletotheD&FISsegment,$8millionapplicabletotheHealthseg-
ment,$5millionapplicabletotheGraphicCommunicationssegmentand
$2millionapplicabletotheCommercialImagingsegment.Thebalanceof
$376millionwasapplicabletomanufacturing,researchanddevelopment,
andadministrativefunctions,whicharesharedacrossallsegments.
ThirdQuarter,2003RestructuringProgram
Duringthethirdquarterof2003,theCompanyannounceditsintentionto
implementaseriesofcostreductionactionsduringthelasttwoquarters
of2003andthefirsttwoquartersof2004,whichwereexpectedtoresult
inpre-taxchargestotaling$350millionto$450million.Itwasanticipated
thattheseactionswouldresultinareductionofapproximately4,500to
6,000positionsworldwide,primarilyrelatingtotherationalizationofglobal
manufacturingassets,reductionofcorporateadministrationandresearch
anddevelopment,andtheconsolidationoftheinfrastructureandadmin-
istrationsupportingtheCompany’sconsumerimagingandprofessional
productsandservicesoperations.
TheCompanyimplementedcertainactionsunderthisProgramduring
2004.Asaresultoftheseactions,theCompanyrecordedchargesof$58
millionin2004,whichwascomposedofseverance,exitcosts,long-lived
assetimpairmentsandinventorywrite-downsof$45million,$7million,
$4millionand$2million,respectively.Theseverancecostsrelatedtothe
eliminationofapproximately2,000positions,includingapproximately850
photofinishingpositions,775manufacturingpositionsand375administra-
tivepositions.Thegeographiccompositionofthepositionstobeeliminated
includesapproximately1,100intheUnitedStatesandCanadaand900
throughouttherestoftheworld.Thereductionofthe2,000positionsand
the$52millionchargesforseveranceandexitcostsarereflectedinthe
ThirdQuarter,2003RestructuringProgramtablebelow.The$4million
chargeforlong-livedassetimpairmentswasincludedinrestructuringcosts
andotherintheaccompanyingConsolidatedStatementofEarningsforthe
yearendedDecember31,2004.Thechargestakenforinventorywrite-
downsof$2millionwerereportedincostofgoodssoldintheaccompany-
ingConsolidatedStatementofEarningsfortheyearendedDecember31,
2004.
