My Walgreens
Pharmacy Intern Trey Jenkins in Marietta,
Georgia, helps residents at a local assisted
living facility better understand their
medications. Trey attends pharmacy
school at Mercer University in Atlanta
with financial assistance from Walgreens.
In 2010, Walgreens employed 244,000 people as
part of a diverse workforce and continued to provide
growth opportunities to attract and retain talent
in our expanding Company.
To invest in our employees and their careers, the Company offers
on-the-job training, opportunities for professional career development,
financial assistance programs for pharmacy students, and management
and pharmacy internships. In this way, Walgreens promotes an environment
in which a wide range of career paths — including horizontal movement
between and across divisions — creates a more nimble workforce with
a broader range of skills.
The Company provides ongoing career development opportunities,
such as continuing education for pharmacists; a pharmacy technician
certification program and advancement opportunities; job skills training for
in-store and supervisory positions; management development programs;
and classroom and online development for corporate employees. Walgreens
also holds regularly scheduled “Lunch and Learn” meetings at which
external thought leaders speak on key business issues and trends.
As well, the Company’s performance management and compensation
programs align department and individual employee goals with the
Company’s strategies, goals and objectives.
Walgreens is also committed to helping our employees who have experienced
hardships caused by long illnesses, accidents, natural disasters and other
situations. In 2010, Walgreens Benefit Fund a tax-exempt charitable
foundation — provided nearly $1 million in financial assistance to more
than 600 individuals who had exhausted their own financial resources.
One of the recipients was Jessica Hatcher, Senior Beauty Advisor in
Hermitage, Tennessee, who lost her house to more than four feet of flood
waters this summer. “The money I received from the Benefit Fund helped
me relocate my family to an apartment,” says Jessica. “My co-workers
also helped by donating food, clothing and furniture.”
