7,500
community events included Walgreens
participation during fiscal 2010
Walgreens establishes meaningful connections with the
communities it serves through support of health care
organizations; creation of job opportunities for people
with disabilities; financial aid to college programs
that help those with limited financial means; “green”
initiatives; and involvement in local events.
A bicycle ride to raise money for a local
HIV/AIDS organization brought out
volunteers from Walgreens stores in
Madison, Wisconsin. The employees
staffed a rest stop, distributing water
and bananas to “refuel” the riders.
My Walgreens
for Active
Community Involvement
The Company sponsors national programs for the American Cancer Society,
American Heart Association and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
In 2010, to promote preventive health care, the AARP/Walgreens Wellness
Tour buses traveled across the United States and Puerto Rico, providing
nearly 1.2 million health screenings worth more than $27 million in more
than 1,400 communities.
Today, Walgreens is a leader in hiring people with disabilities in our stores
and distribution centers. More than 30 percent of the team members at
Walgreens newest distribution center in Windsor, Connecticut, are people
with disabilities ranging from autism to physical impairments. In addition,
Walgreens stores in the Dallas and Fort Worth area launched the Retail
Employees with Disabilities Initiative (REDI) with a goal of hiring people
with disabilities for 10 percent of their service clerk openings. Walgreens
plans to expand the REDI program to communities in other parts of the
country next year.
To encourage diversity in the workplace, Walgreens has donated more than
$3 million since 2008 to support diversity initiatives at pharmacy schools
nationwide. With these donations, Walgreens hopes to encourage
diverse students to consider becoming health care service providers.
Eco-friendly initiatives, from energy efficient lighting in stores to
rooftop solar panels to green shopping bags, are putting more “green”
in Walgreens. In 2009, Walgreens opened the first drugstore to meet
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.
In fiscal 2011, the Company will open its first store using geothermal
energy in Oak Park, Illinois.
In September, Walgreens launched the first ongoing, nationwide Safe
Medication Disposal Program, a safe and environmentally responsible
way to dispose of unused or expired medications. Customers can
purchase a specially designed envelope at Walgreens pharmacy
counters, then place, seal and mail prescription or over-the-counter
medications they no longer use for safe, eco-friendly disposal.
To keep the Walgreens retail network connected to the communities we
serve, the Company’s 1,300 Community Leaders create and participate
in local events each year. From toy and winter coat drives to fundraising
walks to informing neighbors about flu protection, Walgreens is building
upon our long-standing tradition of community pharmacy.

Walgreens store in Wildwood, New Jersey,
uses LED rope lighting to create a neon
look that uses less energy than traditional
lighting. This is one of Walgreens many
eco-friendly initiatives that saves energy
costs for the Company and lowers energy
use for the planet.
