Short-term, highly liquid investments of $1.5 billion and $2.0 billion as of December 31, 2013 and 2014,
respectively, included in cash and cash equivalents on the consolidated balance sheets are not
included in the table above as the gross unrealized gains and losses were immaterial as the carrying
value approximates fair value because of the short maturity of those instruments. Other than the pre-
tax gain of $10.3 billion from the sale of 140 million American Depositary Shares (“ADSs”) of Alibaba
Group in Alibaba Group’s initial public offering (“IPO”) on September 24, 2014, realized gains and
losses from sales of available-for-sale marketable securities were not material for the years ended
December 31, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
