Schneider Electric’s core businesses 33
Major innovations
in buildings
To strengthen its leadership in low voltage
switchgear, Schneider Electric launched a new
generation of Masterpact products in 1999.
T his innovative global offering grew out of our
largest development project ever, involving
250 engineers and technicians in Europe
and the US over 42 months.T he new range
includes integrated communication and metering
functions, which facilitate smart, automated
electrical installation management. T hese features
enhance Masterpacts proven performance
and reliability. In the field of local area networks
(LANs) for buildings, we are adding very high-
performance connection and cabling systems
to our Lexel network products, which will serve
as the basis for voice-data-video networks.
Electric power:
new opportunities
New forms of power generation provide a major
opportunity for medium-term growth.
Schneider Electric, in cooperation with leading
industrial partners, is conducting research on
ultra-high-efficiency polymer-film batteries, fuel
cells and related regulation systems. In the area of
services, we are testing Internet-based remote
support on several user sites.
R& D
facts and figures
In 1999, Schneider Electric invested
EUR 444 million, or 5.3% of sales, in new
product R&D. With more than 3,000 engineers
and technicians worldwide and development
centers in some twenty countries, Schneider
Electric has the resources to develop a truly
international lineup. In addition,
nearly 400 team members in our research
laboratories are engaged in cooperative
anticipatory programs with the scientific
community and outside partners.
Merlin Gerin Prisma GK
This is the first system with interconnectable, dismountable, IP 55-washdown low voltage
switchboards for electrical distribution up to 630A and circuit control. It incorporates
the entire Merlin Gerin Prisma G functional system, enhanced with new solutions for
industrial buildings, such as assembly and wiring of Telemecanique control equipment.
Merlin Gerin Sepam 1000+
This new generation of power-grid protection units
enhances our entry-level Merlin Gerin Sepam 1000 range
for remote grid operation. Main features include protection
of people and property, measurement of grid characteris-
tics, and optimization of electrical equipment management.
Merlin Gerin Sepam 1000+ brings other improvements
such as integrated communication capabilities,
an open-ended design that adapts to all user needs,
compact size and modularity. Ergonomic features make
work easier for operators, contractors, and panelbuilders.
Merlin Gerin Sepam 1000+ is also multilingual, allowing
users to choose the display language.
Square D HVL/cc Medium Voltage Metal-Enclosed
Switchgear
Square D HVL/cc Medium Voltage Metal-Enclosed Switchgear
uses the latest switchgear technology to provide customers
with unparalleled power performance in the industry’s
most compact footprint. The reduced maintenance design
provides advanced protection and numerous features
with a footprint less than one-half the size of traditional 5 kV
and 15 kV load interrupter switchgear.
