The 2010 Report is a condensed update to our 2009 Global
Sustainability Report, which we issue every other year. We
encourage you to learn more about our sustainability commit-
ments and progress, which are an integral part of our mission to
save people money so they can live better.
The minimized environmental footprint of this report is the result
of an extensive, collaborative effort of Walmart and its supply chain
partners. The environmental and social impact was a consideration
from the very inception of the project. It is printed on FSC-certified
responsibly forested paper containing recycled PCW fiber that is
Elementally Chlorine Free (ECF). It is printed using 100% renew-
able wind power (RECs), along with environmental manufactur-
ing principles that were utilized in the printing process. These
practices include environmentally responsible procurement, lean
manufacturing, green chemistry principles, the recycling of
residual materials and reduced VOC inks and coatings.
TOTAL ENVIRONMENTAL SAVINGS IMPACT
Savings baselines were developed using the national averages of similar
coated papers and printing practices by EarthColor Printing.
0.92 acre of forestland preserved via managed forestry
517 fewer trees consumed via recycling
105,034 kWh less energy – the same used by
5 homes for a year
560 metric tons of greenhouse gas offset – the
equivalent of taking 112 cars off the road for a year
188,805 fewer gallons of water consumed
15,679 kWh converted to clean renewable sources
(printing plant using RECs)
