Make affordability
and sustainability
one word
Wal-Mart can change and enhance its value to the world and to our
shareholders. The need for sustainable business practices is increasingly
urgent. Whats good for the environment can be good for business.
Wal-Mart merchandise should be both a ordable and sustainable
so working families don’t have to make a choice. That’s why we have
announced initiatives such as our goal to sell 100 million compact
uorescent light bulbs in the United States by 2008. We know that
this saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s why we unveiled the packaging scorecard for our U.S.
Wal-Mart and Sams Club suppliers this past year. The goal: reduce pack-
aging by  ve percent by 2013 – an e ort that will be equal to remov-
ing 213,000 trucks from the road. That’s also why we announced plans
to purchase all wild-caught fresh and frozen  sh for the U.S. market from
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certi ed sheries within the next
three to  ve years.
These are just some of the many initiatives that re ect the Com-
pany’s commitment to leadership in business and sustainability. To keep
up to date on our e orts, visit www.walmartstores.com/environment.
