(a) In the three months ended March 31, 2015, we changed the classification related to certain payments to partners, reducing both discount
revenue and marketing and promotion expense. The misclassification in prior periods has been revised to conform to the current period
presentation. Accordingly, the average discount rate for prior periods was also revised, resulting in a reduction of between zero and one basis
point in any period from what was originally reported.
(b) Average basic Card Member spending and average fee per card are computed from proprietary card activities only. Average fee per card is
computed based on net card fees, including the amortization of deferred direct acquisition costs divided by average worldwide proprietary
cards-in-force. The average fee per card, adjusted, which is a non-GAAP measure, is computed in the same manner, but excludes amortization
of deferred direct acquisition costs. The amount of amortization excluded was $283 million, $306 million and $262 million for the years ended
December 31, 2015, 2014 and 2013, respectively. We present the average fee per card, adjusted, because we believe this metric presents a
useful indicator of card fee pricing across a range of our proprietary card products.
