What would you say is the main prerequisite for São Paulo’s
sustainable development? Is it financial resources, innova-
tive technologies or political commitment?

Sufficient financial resources are, of course, a key factor.
For example, our waste disposal system already operates
very well. Our system for recycling process water is also
very efficient. A major challenge now is how to process the
wastewater produced in our neighboring cities. There’s lots
of room for improvement here. But to make progress we’ll
need large investments, and we’ll also have to get govern-
ment approval at three different levels – federal, state and
municipal.
