As of September , , the funded status of our defined ben-
efit plans showed an underfunding of € . billion, unchanged
from the prior year. Within these figures, underfunding for
pension plans amounted to € . billion, as of September ,
 and , respectively. An increase in our defined benefit
obligation (DBO) by € . billion mainly resulted from the im-
pact of decreasing market interest rates which was offset partly
by the effect of a refined determination of the discount rate. At
the same time, plan assets increased by € . billion due
mainly to a positive return, primarily driven by fixed-income
and equity investments.
