Motion Pictures and Home Entertainment Business Overview
In the year under review, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s (SPE) motion picture group recorded its
highest ever sales. While the studio had six films in calendar year 2002 earn more than 150 million
U.S. dollars in worldwide box office, including M en in Black II, xXx, Stuart Little 2, Mr. Deeds and
Panic Room, it was truly the year of Spider-Man. This long-aw aited film grossed a company record of
more than 800 million U.S. dollars worldw ide by the end of M arch 2003, and a
sequel is in production for a scheduled calendar 2004 release. By motion picture
studio, SPE achieved a 17% U.S. box office market share and a company record
for worldw ide box office w ith 2.88 billion U.S. dollars recorded in calendar 2002.
Home entertainment capitalized on the success of the theatrical slate as well
as the growth of the worldw ide DVD market to achieve its highest annual
revenues ever of 2.77 billion U.S. dollars. Spider-M an led the way w ith over 40
million initial units shipped w orldw ide, a company record.
SPE is well positioned for the future w ith a strong film slate for the fiscal year
ending M arch 31, 2004 with releases including Anger Management, Daddy Day
Care, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Bad Boys II and S.W.A.T. Various film
suppliers, including Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics,
Revolution Studios as w ell as local language productions, create a diverse film
slate that limits reliance on any one film source.
