Recent R&D Highlights
Sony has succeeded in developing a gallium nitride blue-
violet laser diode, a large-capacity optical recording and
playback device ideal for the broadband era. Demand
for it is expected to expand in the future.
In the realm of mobile networking technology,
used in mobile phones and personal digital assistants,
demand for smaller size, better performing and lower
pow er consuming terminals has grow n. In response,
during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003, Sony
developed a System-on-Glass 3.8 inch, low -temperature
polysilicon TFT LCD that integrates into the LCD circuit
board all the peripheral circuits necessary for the pro-
duction of images. Sony also developed a television
tuner module with a volume of only 1.5ml.
In the field of laser technology, in M ay 2003, Sony
announced development of the worldā€™s first high-
output, dual-wavelength laser on a single chip, com-
patible w ith both recordable DVDs and CDs. Sony is
undertaking pioneering research in the field of optical
technology including media technology.
In the imaging field, Sony integrated its ow n know -
how in high-output lasers with the sophisticated M EMS
(Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology and is
developing a high-contrast, broad-spectrum Grating
Light Valve laser projector.
3.8 inch, low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD
A third advance was the Virtual M obile Engine,
dynamic reconfigurable circuit technology that can alter
a circuitā€™s configuration using software alone. Going
one step further, Sony led the world in incorporating
this technology in a consumer electronics product, the
NW-MS70D Network Walkman.
