2009 REGISTRATION DOCUMENT SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC20
DESCRIPTION OFTHEGROUP, ITSMARKETS ANDITSBUSINESSES
1A STRATEGIC FOCUS ON BALANCING THEENERGYEQUATION
The Group offers products and solutions that can deliver energy
savings of up to 30% without compromising on safety, comfort,
performance or reliability. Schneider Electric’s line up for this market
comprises solutions for energy audits and metering (to establish a
baseline and assess the potential for energy savings), management
of fundamentals (low energy use devices, current control and
reliability), automation (to manage building utilities, electricity use,
motors and lighting), and monitoring (surveillance and consulting).
To help customers preserve, optimise and renew their energy
sources, Schneider Electric:
joined the Energy Management Company Association (EMCA)
and China Building Electricity Effi ciency Committee (CBEEC) in
2007;
became a member of the Alliance To Save Energy in 2008. This
international organisation , founded in 1977, brings together
corporate leaders, politicians, environmental protection
advocates and consumers with the goal of promoting energy
effi ciency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner
environment, and greater energy security.
In 2009, Schneider Electric acquired Conzerv Systems, the
recognised leader in the Indian energy effi ciency market, notably
among industrial and commercial end users. This move has
significantly strengthened the Group’s ability in India to take
advantage of opportunities in the promising energy ef ciency market
and extended its energy metering and management line up for
international markets.
This document provides information on Schneider Electric’s
businesses and competitive position in 2009. To the best
of the Group’s knowledge, no exhaustive report has been
drafted on products and systems for electrical distribution,
automation and control. The Group has compiled data
on its businesses through formal and informal contacts
with industry professionals, especially trade associations.
Schneider Electric estimates its market positions based on
this data and actual revenue in each business.

Energy & Infrastructure: ensuring a safe,
reliable power supply and controlling
operating costs
Schneider Electric enjoys long-term growth opportunities in this area
fueled by population growth, economic development, the expansion
of renewable energies, deregulation of energy markets, growing
security needs, and outsourcing of numerous services.
The Energy & Infrastructure market includes energy networks;
shipping; transportation; water, gas and oil distribution; water
treatment and waste management. It is a market that offers
enormous business prospects.
Industry: enhancing productivity, flexibility,
security and traceability
Business in the Industry market is being driven by the unyielding
deployment of automation everywhere, the need for energy
effi ciency in order to reduce production costs, or to meet regulatory
compliance, or in some cases, to cope with limited power generation
capability of the utility. In addition, the growing demand for
commodities and infrastructure by the emerging economies, and the
long overdue upgrading of the industrial infrastructure in developed
economies, has provided signifi cant opportunities for our End User
segments and OEMs.
Schneider Electric designs energy optimisation solutions for all
sectors of this buoyant market, from water and waste water
treatment plants to mines and cement plants, from oil and gas
pipelines to material handling and packaging machines, to name
only a few. It also offers fl exible, open and easy-to-install automation
solutions and remote management services via the Internet. The
Group works closely with customers to get a thorough understanding
of their applications and to help them enhance productivity, fl exibility,
process and installation safety as well as energy management.
