In 2009, Schneider Electric reduced its CO2 emissions by 44,089
metric tons on a same-business basis.
Examples in2009

streamline the supply chain, a clear source of carbon emissions.
Measures included:
closing 29 distribution centres ;
concentrating 70% of shipping costs with 60 main suppliers;
signifi cantly improving the fi ll rate of trucks used in Europe;
setting up a system to measure CO2 emissions from downstream
shipping (after production) and distribution centre shipping.

Green Premium products list their lifecycle environmental impact,
with information on energy and raw material consumption, recycling
and the presence or elimination of hazardous substances.
A dedicated programme has been set up to publish Product
Environmental Profi les (PEP) for all products sold by Schneider
Electric. As of December31, 2009, 242 PEPs had been published .
This compares with 152 PEPs at end-2008.
The analysis of each product’s environmental characteristics looks at:
the materials used;
the presence of hazardous substances as defi ned by RoHS and
REACH;
nine environmental impacts during the four lifecycle stages:
consumption of raw materials,
energy use,
carbon footprint,
reduction of the ozone layer,
production of photochemical ozone,
acidifi cation of air,
production of hazardous waste,
eutrophication of water,
air toxicity.
the recyclability rate.
To ensure that its environmental data and disclosures are reliable,
Schneider Electric teamed up with other electrical and electronic
equipment makers in 2009 to develop an ISO 14025-compliant
disclosure programme called “PEP_ecopassport”. The programme ,
which covers all electrical and HVAC equipment for buildings,
infrastructure and industry, attests compliance with prevailing
standards and practices. As the Steering Committee chair, Schneider
Electric played a major role in drawing up the association’s bylaws
and governance guidelines and in drafting the PEPs, which will be
deployed in 2010.

When the ISO 14001 environmental management standard was
published in 1996, Schneider Electric immediately initiated a process
to certify its sites. The Group’s goal is to obtain certifi cation for all
manufacturing and supply chain sites within two years after their
acquisition or construction.

2009 audited indicators
In 2009, the One company programme extended the scope of
certifi cation to include research centres and commercial/services
sites with more than 300 employees. A number of these sites,
including all the French and German sales agencies, were ISO 14001
certifi ed at the end of 2009.
The scope of reporting has grown steadily from 184 in 2006 to 201
in 2007, 234 in 2008 and 240 in 2009. The Group’s environmental
reporting principles were offi cially audited in 2007 and 2008.
