Planet & Society Barometer
Schneider Electric has used the Planet & Society Barometer as its
sustainable development scorecard since 2005. The Barometer
outlines the Group’s objectives for a three-year period and tracks
progress made in achieving targets on a quarterly basis. Schneider
Electric developed the Planet & Society Barometer in the absence of
a recognised standard for measuring an organisation s sustainable
development performance. All of the targets are voluntary and none
of them respond to legal constraints. The Planet & Society Barometer
is designed to:
bring the corporate community together around sustainable
development objectives;
communicate on the Group’s improvement plans with
stakeholders.
The Planet & Society Barometer is part of the One company
programme and is administered and promoted by the Sustainable
Development Department. Departments directly concerned by the
improvement plans, including Human Resources, Environmental
Affairs, Access to energy programme and the Schneider Electric
Foundation, implement measures to achieve the plans’ goals. Each
department is represented by a project leader, who works directly
with local managers in their respective areas.
With the introduction of the new One company programme in
2009, Schneider Electric defi ned new ambitions for its sustainable
development approach, following up on its ten targets for 2005-2008
with 13 planet, profi t, people improvement plans (see table on page
43 ). Two critical indicators remain: Schneider Electric’s presence in
the four major socially responsible investment index families and the
percentage of purchases from suppliers who support the Global
Compact or equivalent.
Four other indicators have been broadened to account for
improvements already made. For example, the goal to reduce energy
consumption at the Group’s sites has been included in a larger plan
to reduce CO2 emissions.
Seven indicators have been added to address stakeholders’ new
expectations. The scorecard now includes development targets for
initiatives with high social and/or environmental value-added, such as
the Group’s energy effi ciency programmes , the BipBop programme
to deliver energy access to people “at the bottom of the pyramid”
(see page 66 ) and programmes to recover end-of-life equipment.
Since 2009, the Planet & Society Barometer has been published:
on the Internet at www.baromet er.schneider-electric.com. The
site was expanded in early 2009 to explain the new indicators
for 2009-2011;
in a quarterly newsletter that informs the Group’s sustainable
development stakeholders about the previous quarter’s
performance and achievements;
on the Group’s intranet, next to the Schneider Electric share price.
The share price refl ects value creation for shareholders, while the
Barometer refl ects value creation for stakeholders.
Schneider Electric’s sustainable development performance in 2009
is presented in the table page 43 , which shows an increase in the
overall rating from 3/10 on January1, 2009 to 6 /10 on December31,
2009. This increase refl ects strong gains in a number of indicators,
including those concerning the frequency of work accidents,
employee training in energy management and growth in the
Group’s energy effi ciency business. Indicator-by-indicator results
are presented on pages 46 to 72 .
