Consumerresearchanddataanalysis arekeyelementsof using technology to enable R&D. Throughour
CenterforHealthMetrics,weminedatainwaysthatallowustofocusattheindividualmemberlevelon
behaviormodification.Inthe19thcentury,mostpeoplediedbecausesocietydidn’thavetheabilitytoprevent
orcuredisease.Inthe21stcentury,themajorcausesofdiseaseincludeobesity,heartdiseaseanddiabetes,
eachaconditionthatdoctorscantreat,cureorprevent.Thekeyistoidentifyindividualswhosehealthhistory
andlifestylechoicesputthematriskfordevelopingorworseningtheseconditions.Everytimeweidentify
“pre-sick”individualsandintervenetosuggestbehaviorchange,wepotentially improvehealthandsave
moneyforemployeesandtheircompanies.
TheinvestmentintechnologyintegrationwithinHumanaallowsustooffercomprehensiveproductsand
servicesthatworkeffectivelyforourcustomers.
Long-termviewinashort-termworld

OneofthekeylessonswelearnedfromourlongevityintheMedicarebusinessisthatit’sdifficulttotime
marketcyclesinthevariouspartsofourbusinesses.Bystayingcommittedtobusinessesandproductsthat
webelieveareviableinthelongterm,webenefitasthemarketmoves.Ourdiversificationacrosssegments
andproductsallowsustoincreaseouropportunitiesforsuccess.
2005:Diversifiedgrowth
Weareoptimisticabout2005andconfidentaboutthegrowthgoalswe’vesetforthecomingyear.Wehave
greatervisibilityandstabilitythanwe’veeverhadinourGovernmentsegment.InourCommercialsegment,
weanticipatethe continuedportfoliomigrationtoASO forourlargecustomers andmoregrowthinthe
individualHumanaOneproduct.Inaddition,weseecontinuedprogressforourhigh-marginSmartproducts,
includingournewSmartExpressofferingforgroupsof2to299employees.Althoughit’stooearlytobe
certain,wethinkwe’reseeingthebeginningsofareturntorationalpricinginourcommercialmarkets.We’re
alsofocusingoncontinuedexcellenceinthedailyexecutionandmanagementofourexistingbusinesses.
ThesmoothcompletionofourTRICARE transitionistypicalofourmanagementteam’sabilitytoexecute
effectivelyacrossmultiplefunctions.
