Medicareisanexcellentbusinessforthose,likeHumana,whostayedwithitandunderstandhowtoboth
workwiththefederalgovernmentandservetheseniorcitizencustomer.WhileMedicareisalargegrowth
opportunityin2005, wethinkthebiggest opportunitiesliein2006 and2007,whenthe program’snew
regionalPPOsandprescriptiondrugplans(PDPs)areineffect.We’vebuiltintoour2005financialsthecost
toprepareforourexpandedprogramsin2006.
PPOs, favored by many consumers, offer an especially large opportunity for Humana, both in terms of
expandingourlocalMedicarePPOsandparticipatinginregionalPPOsin2006andbeyond.
Commercialportfoliomigration
Inthecommercialbusiness,thekeystoryisalsooneofgrowth.2004wasapivotalyearinourcommercial
businessasweexitedunprofitablebusinessandpursuedourstrategyofgrowingrevenuesonlywhenwecan
showcommensurateimprovementsinprofitability.Larger-groupfullyinsuredaccountsoftenrequirecarriers
toaccept“slice”business,anareathatwillnotbeaprimaryfocusforourgrowth.Weintendinsteadtodirect
ourlarger-groupeffortstowardmaximizinggrowthinfull-replacementASOaccounts.Wealsoexpectour
individualinsuredproductstocontinuetoachievesubstantialgrowth.
Where we see more opportunity for full-replacement, fully insured growth is in our small- to mid-sized
business. We believe there is still an unmet need in the marketplace and anticipate that a far greater
percentageofourfuturecommercialportfoliowillconsistofmembersinthissegment.Thefeedbackfrom
thebrokeragecommunityrelatedtoSmartExpresshasbeenexcellentandweanticipategrowingadoption
oncetheprogressivemarketrolloutiscompletedinthefirsthalfof2005.
Also,ourhigher-marginSmartSuiteandSmartSelectproductsforlargeremployerswillcontinuetogrowand
contributetothebottomline.Weseetheseproductsasbeingveryappealinginthe300to3,000employee
market.WhileSmartproductsremainarelativelysmallpartofouroverallcommercialportfolio,theycontinue
togaintraction.Theseproductshaveproventheirabilitytoreducetrendforemployerstomid-single-digits
andhaveanexcellentreputationinthemarket.
Asnotedabove,recentlywe’veseensomemitigationinaggressivepricingbyourcompetitors.Whileit’stoo
earlytocallthisatrend,wethinkitindicatesthatrationalpricingwillreturntoourmarketssoonerrather
thanlater.WebelievethiswillhavethemostnoticeableimpactonourSmartproducts.Whencompetitors
arenotpricingoverlyaggressively,the“consultativesale”associatedwiththisnon-commodity,long-term
solutionbringsitsdifferentiatingaspectsintofocus,andismorelikelytoresultinasuccessfulclose.
Expandinganalreadyrobustpresence
In 2005, we expect to use our product mix diversification to expand our medical provider network and
createnew growthopportunities.Whilewebelievethatthisindustrywillcontinuetoconsolidate,large
mergershaveamixedhistoryrelativetoexecutionand,ultimately,shareholdervalue.ForHumana,targeted
acquisitionsthatenhancegeographicandproductstrengtharelikelyareasoffocusgoingforward.Lastyear’s
Ochsneracquisition,whichwasverysuccessfulandverysmoothlyintegrated,reestablishedusintheindustry
asanexcellentpartnerforqualitynichecompanieslookingforahome.TheCarePlusacquisitionlookstobe
thesame,andenabledustosignificantlyraiseearningsguidancewhenitclosedonFebruary16,2005.As
always,we’llbealerttosimilaropportunitiesthatcanbeaccomplishedattherightprice.
Importantly,thereareotherwaysinadditiontoacquisitiontoexpandourmarketfootprint.WhileHumana
isoftenviewedasasuper-regionalfirm,weactuallyhavegeographiccoverageasextensiveassomeofthe
largest participants in the industry, and we compete with them in multiple markets. In addition to fill-in
geographicacquisitions,suchasOchsner,weareusingourproductleadershipinmarketstohelpexpandour
geographicfootprint.Webelievethattherearecertainnicheswherewecanincreaseourgeographicscope
basedonprovidinginnovativeproductsthatmaynotbeotherwiseavailable.Weexpectourfootprinttogrow
asprovidersseethebenefitoffacilitatingHumana’scompetitivenessintheirmarkets.
