Network currently has more than 9.8 million
registered accounts worldwide, as of June
2007, while downloads to date exceed
170 million.
In fall 2008, SCE plans to introduce the
Open Beta service for PLAYSTATION®Home,
the online community that allows PS3 users
to meet, interact and play games.
PS3 is a computer entertainment system
that brings together Sony’s considerable
know-how and cutting-edge technologies—
including those used in Cell Broadband
Engine and other high-performance semi-
conductors, and advanced devices such as
the Blu-ray Disc drive.
With the aim of achieving strong growth
for the PS3 platform, in fi scal year 2007 SCE
introduced a new 40GB model and expanded
the PS3 software lineup. As a result of these
and other measures targeting both software
and hardware, sales of the platform rose
worldwide after the year-end holiday sales
season, boosting sales for the fi scal year to
9.24 million units.
Going forward, SCE will cultivate even
broader market acceptance by continuing to
enhance its software lineup and expand its
network-related services. At the same time,
SCE will endeavor to continue to implement
cost reductions to improve profi tability.
Cumulative sales of PlayStation®2 (PS2)
reached approximately 130 million units,
making it the world’s best-selling game
platform. PS2 continues to perform well,
particularly in Europe and North America. In
scal year 2007—the eighth year since its
launch—global sales of PS2 totaled 13.73
million units, highlighting its long-standing
contribution to profi ts in Sony’s Game busi-
ness. SCE will continue to promote PS2 in
emerging markets, such as those in Eastern
Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as
by expanding the PS2 software lineup.
Cumulative global sales of PSP® handheld
entertainment system surpassed 37 million
units and have also given rise to million-
selling hit software titles in Japan, North
America and Europe.
In September 2007, SCE unveiled a new
PSP® that is slimmer and lighter than the
original model. SCE also enhanced the range
