of PSP® software titles and introduced such
new features as a one-seg tuner for the
Japanese market, and Skype compatibility
worldwide. This move succeeded in expand-
ing customer support for the platform and
contributed to sales of 13.89 million units in
scal year 2007. In addition to bolstering its
lineup of appealing software titles available
only for PSP®, SCE will endeavor to add new
functions—including linkage with PS3—and
services in an effort to accelerate the market
penetration of PSP®.
Enhancing the lineup of software titles is
a crucial aspect of SCE’s efforts to expand
the PS3, PS2 and PSP® businesses. Sony
Computer Entertainment World Wide
Studios (SCE WWS)—SCE’s in-house
software title development group—has
released a steady stream of hit titles,
including MotorStorm, Gran Turismo 5
Prologue and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
for PS3, and God of War®: Chains of
Olympus and Ratchet & Clank®: Size
Matters for PSP®. To reinforce SCE WWS’s
development capabilities, in September
2007, SCE acquired two U.K.-based
software developers that are regarded
highly worldwide. In addition, SCE added
to its group Sony Online Entertainment
(SOE), a U.S. online game development
and services company previously part of
Sony Pictures Entertainment, in April 2008.
SCE will step up efforts to reinforce its
software development business by pro-
moting shared access to SCE’s global
software development resources and
know-how, as well as cooperation among
SCE WWS studios in Japan, North America
and Europe.
To improve the effi ciency and accommo-
date the various development styles of
PlayStation® third party software developers,
SCE is taking steps to enhance the game
development environment. These include
enhancing programming tools and building
a stronger support framework.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) had
a very successful year at the North
American box office in calendar year 2007,
breaking the $1 billion mark for the sixth
consecutive year. The studio was the only
one in Hollywood to exceed $8 billion in
North American box office revenues for
the 2002–2007 timeframe.1
New releases included Spider-Man 3,
an explosive hit that was the No. 1 film at
the North American box office in calendar
year 20072 and generated ticket sales of
nearly $900 million worldwide. The film
set the all-time record for the biggest
opening 3-day weekend at the North
American box office.3 Other hits in calendar
year 2007 included Superbad, Ghost Rider
and This Christmas.
SPE expanded its international motion
picture production business in calendar
year 2007 in India and Russia and other
nations around the world. SPE released its
first Bollywood musical, Saawariya, in
November.
