14.7 Independent assurance report
To the Supervisory Board and Shareholders of Koninklijke Philips
Electronics N.V.:
Introduction
We have been engaged by the Supervisory Board of Koninklijke Philips
Electronics N.V. to provide assurance on the information in the chapter
Sustainability statements in the Annual Report 2011. The Board of
Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of
the information in the chapter Sustainability statements. Our
responsibility is to provide assurance on this information contained in
this Annual Report.
Scope
Our engagement was designed to provide:
limited assurance on whether the information in chapter 14,
Sustainability statements, of this Annual Report is, in all material
respects, fairly stated in accordance with the reporting criteria.
reasonable assurance on whether the information on 2011 in
chapter 14, Sustainability statements, in the sections 14.1 to 14.6
with the exclusion of section 14.3 and the section ‘Health and Safety’
in section 14.4 of this Annual Report is, in all material respects,
presented in accordance with the reporting criteria.
Procedures performed to obtain a limited level of assurance are aimed
at determining the plausibility of data and are less extensive than those
for a reasonable level of assurance.
Our procedures for limited level of assurance included reviewing
systems and processes for data management, assessing the
appropriateness of the accounting policies used, assessing the design
and existence of data collection and reporting process at a limited
number of sites and evaluating the overall presentation of sustainability
information within our scope.
For the information subject to a reasonable level of assurance additional
procedures were carried out. These procedures included testing of the
operational effectiveness of systems and methods used to collect and
process the data and information reported.
We have also reviewed, to the extent of our competence, whether the
information on sustainability in the Performance highlights of this
Annual Report, the Management’s report as defined in the introduction
paragraph of chapter 12, Group financial statements, of this Annual
Report is consistent with the information in chapter 14, Sustainability
statements, of this Annual Report.
Reporting criteria
Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. applies the Sustainability Reporting
Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (G3.1) supported by
internally developed guidelines, as detailed in Approach to sustainability
reporting in chapter 14, Sustainability statements, of this Annual
Report. It is important to view the performance data in the context of
this explanatory information. We believe that these criteria are suitable
in view of the purpose of our assurance engagement.
Standards
We conducted our engagement in accordance with the International
Standard for Assurance Engagements (ISAE) 3000: Assurance
Engagements other than Audits or Reviews of Historical Financial
Information, issued by the International Auditing and Assurance
Standards Board. This Standard requires, amongst others, that the
assurance team possesses the specific knowledge, skills and
professional competencies needed to understand sustainability
information, and that they comply with the requirements of the Code
of Ethics for Professional Accountants from the International
Federation of Accountants to ensure their independence.
Conclusion
Based on our work described in this report, we conclude that:
nothing came to our attention to indicate that the information in
chapter 14, Sustainability statements, of this Annual Report is not,
in all material respects, fairly stated in accordance with the reporting
criteria.
