Appendix 1 Capital and risk management
Credit risk
Credit risk is the risk of financial loss due to the failure of a customer or counterparty to meet its obligation to
settle outstanding amounts. For a description of the bank’s credit risk framework, governance, policies and
methodologies refer to Capital and risk management - Credit risk in the 2014 Annual Report and Accounts.
Loans and related credit metrics
The tables below show gross loans and advances (excluding reverse repos) and related credit metrics by
segment. Risk elements in lending (REIL) comprise impaired loans and accruing loans past due 90 days or
more as to principal or interest. Impaired loans are all loans (including loans subject to forbearance) for
which an impairment provision has been established. For collectively-assessed loans, impairment loss
provisions are not allocated to individual loans and the entire portfolio is included in impaired loans. Accruing
loans past due 90 days or more comprise loans past due 90 days where no impairment loss is expected.
