Creating livable cities with light
Our innovative, energy-efficient lighting solutions can
help municipal authorities create towns and cities that
are safe and enjoyable to live, work and relax in.
The challenge of growing urbanization
Less than a century ago, fewer than 10% of the world’s
population lived in cities. Today, that figure stands at over
50%, and it is estimated that by 2030 nearly six billion
people – three quarters of the world’s population – will be
living in cities, as some 130 million people move into urban
areas every year.
Urban growth and transformation on this scale presents
new social, economic and environmental challenges for
those who live, work and do business in cities. Quality of
life (safety, security, health and well-being), the promotion
of commerce, entrepreneurism and tourism, and historic
preservation are all high on municipal agendas. At the
same time, towns and cities are looking to reduce their
ecological impact: urban environments contribute heavily
to the consumption and cost of energy, while also
disturbing the balance of nature through artificial light,
pollution and waste.
In the emerging markets, we are seeing a rapid expansion of the
number of conurbations with 20 million or more inhabitants.
Safer, more attractive urban spaces
Quite simply, light helps make a city safer and more
attractive, enhancing its brand identity – the distinctive
signature that defines its appeal and differentiates it from
other cities. This is important not only for civic pride, but
also to ensure that the city remains viable and competitive
in the global marketplace.
