Allowance for Credit Losses
The allowance for credit losses represents management’s estimate of credit losses inherent in the portfolio.
The allowance for credit losses consists of two components: the allowance for loan losses and the reserve for
unfunded credit commitments. Management’s assessment of the appropriateness of the allowance for credit
losses is based on a combination of both these components. At December 31, 2011, the allowance for credit
losses totaled $2.8 billion or 3.64 percent of loans, net of unearned income, compared to $3.3 billion or 3.93
percent at year-end 2010. See Note 6 to the consolidated financial statements and the “Credit Risk” section found
later in this report for a detailed discussion of the allowance.
