3 Operating expenses continued
The average number of persons employed, rounded to the nearest hundred, in the continuing operations of the Group during the year, excluding
temporary staff, was 192,000 (2008 – 197,100; 2007 – 157,200); on the same basis discontinued operations employed 2,500 employees (2008 –
32,200; 2007 – 13,300). The average number of temporary employees during 2009 was 9,700 (2008 – 7,000; 2007 – 4,900). The number of persons
employed in the continuing operations of the Group at 31 December, excluding temporary staff, was as follows:
