3 Operating expenses continued
The average number of persons employed, rounded to the nearest hundred, in the continuing operations of the Group during the year, excluding
temporary staff, was 153,400 (2009 - 166,400; 2008 - 175,400); on the same basis discontinued operations employed 6,200 employees (2009 - 28,100;
2008 - 58,300). The average number of temporary employees during 2010 was 11,600 (2009 - 9,700; 2008 - 7,000). The number of persons employed
in the continuing operations of the Group at 31 December, excluding temporary staff, was as follows:
